Plan a lovely 1 day trip to do a bit of wine tasting in Elgin. Unlike Stellenbosch the farms are generally not as full and the tasting experience is less commercial. Which essentially means you are more likely to get a private cellar tour at no added cost, a chat with the owner or the wine maker and refills!!). On top of that the hospitality is like no wine region I have visited in the Cape before. With it being a cool climate region , summer is the best time to chill on the farm and enjoy the crisp whites (wine not people) on offer.

Paul Cluver
What value for money! Literally 70% of the whites are worth a buy. My all time favourite is the Paul Cluver Riesling. I am not a dessert wine person but I made an exception for this.
Paul Cluver Riesling
Vintage: 2011
Colour and Clarity: Bright , clear tinge of yellow
Bouquet: unique. Slightly oily - similar to a wooded chardonnay. Hint of prunes
Taste: Balance of sugar and acidity. Orange and pear flavour comes through.
Finish: Lingering granny smith
Almenkerk
View from the tasting room overlooks the Elgin wine valley. On the day we visited it was quite windy so we opted to have our tasting inside with the farm dog. Lets just say he had one too many. After noticing that our interest in wine goes beyond drinking, the wine maker gave us a private tour of the cellar.
Paul Wallace
What a champion couple. Mrs Wallace added some complementary chocolate for pairing. Mr Wallace chatted to us throughout our tasting . Telling us a about his background, wanting to know a bit about us and enlightening us on what the Elgin region has to offer. It truly felt like we were visiting our long last uncle.
